Persistent ventricular ectopic beats (VEB) in flying personnel were studied. A significant portion developed cardiovascular disease, but no sudden deaths occurred during follow-up.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Aerospace Medicine

    Background:

    • Ventricular ectopic beats (VEB) are common cardiac arrhythmias.
    • Routine medical examinations in flying personnel provide a unique cohort for studying cardiac health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the long-term cardiovascular implications of persistent ventricular ectopic beats (VEB) in flying personnel.
    • To assess the incidence of cardiovascular disease and sudden death in individuals with persistent VEB.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of electrocardiograms (ECG) from 8,000 flying personnel examined between 1963 and 1976.
    • Identification and follow-up of subjects with persistent VEB (defined as same-form VEB on tracings at least 1 year apart).
    • Cardiovascular disease assessment including ischaemic heart disease, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Ventricular ectopic beats (VEB) were detected in 2.2% (178/8,000) of the cohort.
    • Of 98 subjects followed, 55% (54/98) exhibited persistent VEB.
    • Significant cardiovascular disease developed in 27% (15/54) of those with persistent VEB; no sudden deaths were recorded.

    Conclusions:

    • Persistent ventricular ectopic beats (VEB) in flying personnel are associated with an increased risk of developing significant cardiovascular disease.
    • Despite the presence of complex VEB in a notable proportion, sudden death was not observed during the follow-up period.
    • Long-term monitoring of flying personnel with persistent VEB is crucial for cardiovascular risk stratification.
