Area of Science:

  • Medical research
  • Clinical psychology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Delirium is a common and serious condition in medically ill patients.
  • Accurate assessment of delirium severity is crucial for effective management.
  • Existing measures may have limitations for repeated clinical assessments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the reliability and validity of the Memorial Delirium Assessment Scale (MDAS).
  • To evaluate the MDAS as a tool for measuring delirium severity in medically hospitalized patients.

Main Methods:

  • Two studies were conducted with medically hospitalized cancer and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients.
  • Study 1: Assessed inter-rater reliability and internal consistency of the MDAS using multiple raters.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Study 2: Compared MDAS ratings with other delirium and cognitive functioning measures.
  • Main Results:

    • The MDAS demonstrated high inter-rater reliability (0.92) and internal consistency (0.91).
    • MDAS ratings significantly differed between delirious and non-delirious patients (P < 0.0002).
    • MDAS scores strongly correlated with the Delirium Rating Scale (r = 0.88) and Mini-Mental State Examination (r = -0.91).

    Conclusions:

    • The MDAS is a brief, reliable, and valid tool for assessing delirium severity in medically ill populations.
    • The MDAS is suitable for use by multiple raters and for repeated assessments in clinical research.
    • The MDAS offers advantages over existing instruments for delirium assessment.
