Abstract:
In the British Isles there are a small number of neurosurgeons. The number of career trainees has been rigorously controlled over the years, such that there is a sufficient number to satisfy the number of new consultants required as the result of retirement and the creation of new posts. The number of career trainees posts is 89 but the current calculated requirement is for 112 career trainees. In addition overseas trainees come to the British Isles, usually for a specific part of their training.
