Background:

Primary care physicians in small community practices face challenges in increasing mammography referrals.
Behavioral interventions are being explored to improve cancer screening rates.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral techniques in enhancing mammography referrals and utilization.
To assess the impact of cue enhancement and feedback on physician screening practices.

Main Methods:

A 1-year randomized trial involving 61 community practices.
Practices were assigned to education-only, education plus chart stickers, or education plus chart stickers with feedback and rewards.
Mammography referrals, completions, and compliance were tracked via quarterly chart audits of over 11,000 women aged 50+.

Main Results:

Mammography referral and completion rates increased initially but declined over time.
Compliance rates showed sustained improvement throughout the year in intervention groups compared to the control.
Cue enhancement, particularly chart stickers, demonstrated a significant and lasting effect on mammography compliance.

Conclusions:

Mammography chart stickers are an effective tool for increasing cancer screening in small community practices.
These practices serve as a vital channel for reaching older women requiring mammography screening.
