    Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) levels decrease with age in human veins, altering their ratio and potentially increasing susceptibility to vein disease.

    Background:

    • Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) are key regulators of cell proliferation and extracellular matrix synthesis.
    • Vein disease, such as varicose veins, is often associated with aging and alterations in vein wall structure and function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the roles of bFGF and PDGF in vein disease and aging.
    • To determine the age-dependent effects of bFGF and PDGF on human saphenous vein smooth muscle cell proliferation.
    • To quantify the levels of bFGF and PDGF in vein walls and their relationship with donor age.

    Main Methods:

    • Culturing of smooth muscle cells from human saphenous veins.
    • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure bFGF and PDGF content in vein wall homogenates.

    • These changes could increase the susceptibility of veins to developing varicose disease.
    • Further research is warranted to explore therapeutic strategies targeting these growth factors.
