Summary

Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA was found more frequently in abdominal aortic aneurysm walls than in normal aortas. Further research is needed to understand the role of this bacteria in aneurysm development.

Background:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are a significant cause of mortality.
  • The role of infectious agents in AAA pathogenesis is under investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the presence of Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA in infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (IAAA) walls.
  • To compare C. pneumoniae DNA presence in IAAA walls versus non-aneurysmal infrarenal abdominal aorta (NIAA) walls.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 40 patients with IAAAs and 40 controls without aneurysms.
  • A nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was used to detect C. pneumoniae DNA in aortic tissue specimens.
  • Tissue samples were collected during surgery for IAAAs and post-mortem for controls.

Main Results:

  • Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA was detected in 35% of IAAA specimens compared to 5% of NIAA specimens (p = 0.001).
  • No clinical factors were identified that predicted the presence of C. pneumoniae in aneurysm walls.

Conclusions:

  • A significantly higher frequency of C. pneumoniae was observed in the walls of IAAAs compared to NIAAs.
  • While not proving causation, these findings suggest further investigation into the potential role of C. pneumoniae in AAA pathogenesis is warranted.
