Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Music therapy (MT) is a multisensorial approach with limited medical assessment.
  • Parkinson's Disease (PD) involves significant motor and emotional impairments.
  • Active MT utilizes structured instrument use for motor and emotional responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effects of active music therapy in the neurorehabilitation of Parkinson's Disease patients.
  • To assess MT's impact on motor function, emotional state, and quality of life in PD.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 16 PD patients participating in 13 weekly 2-hour MT sessions.
  • Neurological assessments included UPDRS for PD severity, Happiness Measures (HM) for emotions, and PDQL for quality of life.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Evaluations were conducted at baseline, end of sessions, and bi-weekly.
  • Main Results:

    • Significant improvements in motor function, especially hypokinesia, were observed post-session and overall.
    • Music therapy positively impacted emotional functions, activities of daily living (UPDRS-ADL), and quality of life (PDQL).

    Conclusions:

    • Active, multisensorial music therapy effectively stimulates motor, affective, and behavioral functions in PD patients.
    • Active MT is a promising new method for inclusion in Parkinson's Disease rehabilitation programs.
