Background:

  • Optic nerve sheath decompression (ONSD) is a surgical procedure to relieve pressure on the optic nerve.
  • It is used to treat conditions causing papilledema and visual loss, such as idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

Observation:

  • This study reviews two pediatric cases (under 16 years) undergoing ONSD and analyzes existing literature.
  • Post-surgery, both children showed resolution of optic disc edema.
  • Visual outcomes varied, with some improvement in one eye per patient, but also unchanged or worsened vision in the other eye for each.

Findings:

  • Overall, 66% of patients in the literature experienced improved visual acuity after ONSD.
  • Visual field improvement was noted in 33%, while 17% experienced worsening of both visual acuity and field.
