Two years of iodized water in Pirque, Chile, showed a decrease in goiter prevalence. School children maintained normal thyroid function (TSH and thyroxin) and iodine excretion, indicating no additional thyroid issues from extra iodine intake.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Endocrinology
  • Nutrition

Background:

  • Iodine salt fortification for 20 years significantly reduced goiter in Pirque, Chile.
  • Iodized water supplementation (0.5 mg iodine/liter) was implemented in the region.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess thyroid function and urinary iodine excretion in school-aged children after two years of iodized water.
  • To evaluate the impact of increased iodine intake on thyroid health in a rural population.

Main Methods:

  • Examined 134 children (6-12 years old).
  • Measured urinary iodine excretion in 56 children.
  • Assessed thyroxin and TSH levels in 45 children without goiter.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Goiter prevalence was 7% (9 children).
  • Median urinary iodine excretion was 158 micrograms/dl.
  • Thyroxin and TSH levels were within normal ranges; newborns had normal TSH and no goiter.
  • Conclusions:

    • Compared to pre-iodination (9.6% goiter, 57.6 micrograms/dl urinary iodine), current iodine intake is safe.
    • Extra iodine from water supplementation did not cause adverse thyroid problems in this population.
