    Summary

Antibiotic allergies can cause severe anaphylactic reactions during surgery. This study found that approximately 15% of peri-operative anaphylactic accidents were linked to antibiotics, with cephalosporins being a common cause.

    Area of Science:

    • Anesthesiology
    • Clinical Immunology
    • Pharmacology

    Context:

    • Peri-operative anaphylaxis is a rare but serious complication.
    • Antibiotics are frequently used during surgical procedures.
    • Identifying triggers for anaphylaxis is crucial for patient safety.

    Purpose:

    • To report on the incidence and causes of antibiotic-induced anaphylaxis in a surgical setting.
    • To highlight the role of specific antibiotics in peri-operative allergic reactions.

    Summary:

    • Over four years and 5,500 allergy consultations, 32 patients experienced peri-operative anaphylactic accidents.
    • Five of these accidents (approximately 15%) were attributed to antibiotics.
    • Cephalosporins were implicated in three cases, vancomycin in one, and erythromycin in one.

    Impact:

    • This data underscores the importance of considering antibiotic allergies in pre-anesthetic evaluations.
    • Awareness of antibiotic-related anaphylaxis can guide prophylactic measures and emergency management.
    • Further research into antibiotic hypersensitivity during anesthesia is warranted.
