A 70-year-old man

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • A 70-year-old male presented with a round opacity in the left lower lung.
  • Initial investigations included chest computed tomography (CT) and bronchoscopy.

Observation:

  • Bronchoscopy, including brushings and washings, did not reveal malignant cells or acid-fast bacilli.
  • The patient was initially diagnosed with a benign tumor and received no medication.

Findings:

  • Chest CT scans 1.5 months post-bronchoscopy showed complete resolution of the round opacity.
  • The imaging characteristics were consistent with round atelectasis.

Implications:

  • This case highlights an unusual but possible presentation of round atelectasis.
  • It underscores the importance of considering benign conditions in the differential diagnosis of lung opacities.
