    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Speech-Language Pathology

    Background:

    • Psychogenic dysphonia (PD) can present with varying degrees of therapeutic difficulty.
    • While some cases resolve quickly, others require extensive intervention.

    Observation:

    • Two illustrative cases of severe PD are presented, highlighting a complex, multi-layered therapeutic process.
    • Therapists must navigate neurophysiological, intrapsychic, and interpersonal factors influencing voice and overall well-being.

    Findings:

    • Successful resolution of severe PD involves "peeling back layers" of complex contributing factors.
    • Therapeutic success hinges on the therapist's ability to integrate insights across multiple functional levels.
