Insights
Epidermal inclusion cysts can form from skin cell implantation. This case shows such a cyst developing after surgery for benign fibrous histiocytoma.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Pathology
- Surgical Oncology
Background:
- Epidermal inclusion cysts (EICs) are commonly caused by epidermal implantation.
- Recurrent benign fibrous histiocytoma (BFH) is a soft tissue tumor requiring surgical intervention.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present a case illustrating EIC formation via implantation.
- To highlight a potential complication in post-surgical BFH cases.
Main Methods:
- Case report analysis.
- Histopathological examination of the cyst and surrounding tissue.
Main Results:
- An epidermal inclusion cyst was identified.
- Evidence of epidermal implantation into the dermis was observed.
- The cyst was associated with a site of previous BFH excision.
Conclusions:
- Surgical manipulation can lead to epidermal implantation and subsequent EIC formation.
- EICs should be considered in the differential diagnosis of subcutaneous lesions following surgery for BFH.
Abstract:
Epidermal infundibular cysts have been known to arise from implantation of epidermis in the dermis or subcutaneous tissues. The present case illustrates the theory of implantation in an epidermal inclusion cyst in a previously operated case of recurrent benign fibrous histiocytoma.
