Abstract:
The data of foreign literature and original findings on possible role of auto-, paracrine and endocrine mechanisms of bone sarcoma growth regulation are reviewed basing on observation in these tumors of receptors of the epidermal growth factor (REGF), EGF-like peptides, receptors of glucocorticoids, androgens and estrogens. Link of these indices with clinicomorphological characteristics of the disease and its prognosis is suggested. REGF in primary bone tumors may serve as targets for therapy with drugs influencing EGF-dependent mechanism of tumor growth stimulation. Groups of these drugs are considered in detail.
Insights
This review explores how growth factor receptors influence bone sarcoma. Targeting epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) may offer new therapeutic strategies for bone tumors.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Endocrinology
- Molecular Biology
Background:
- Bone sarcomas are regulated by auto-, paracrine, and endocrine mechanisms.
- Receptors for epidermal growth factor (REGF), EGF-like peptides, glucocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens are present in bone tumors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review the role of various receptor mechanisms in bone sarcoma growth.
- To correlate these mechanisms with clinical and prognostic factors.
- To identify REGF as a potential therapeutic target.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of foreign data.
- Analysis of original findings on receptor expression in bone tumors.
- Correlation of receptor expression with clinicomorphological characteristics and prognosis.
Main Results:
- Expression of REGF, EGF-like peptides, and steroid hormone receptors is observed in bone tumors.
- These receptor indices may link to disease characteristics and prognosis.
- REGF shows potential as a therapeutic target in primary bone tumors.
Conclusions:
- Targeting REGF-dependent mechanisms offers a promising therapeutic avenue for bone sarcomas.
- Further research into EGF-dependent pathways could lead to novel treatment strategies.
