1USC Department of Nursing, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, USA.
Abstract:
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 for students with disabilities in elementary and secondary school settings specifies that students with disabilities must not be discriminated against because of their disabilities; therefore, the school is required to provide the necessary accommodations to assure this does not occur. The school plans for making educational accommodations for students with disabilities when their condition adversely affects their ability to learn are known as 504 plans. This article provides information about the history of 504 plans; requirements for primary, secondary, and post-secondary settings; and how nurses can be involved. Nurses can have an important role in schools and clinical settings in developing 504 plans.
