Granulomatous periorificial dermatitis can present with extrafacial papules in children. These additional lesions are self-limiting and do not alter the condition's prognosis or treatment response.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pediatric Dermatology

Background:

  • Granulomatous periorificial dermatitis (GPD) is a common condition in children.
  • It typically presents as yellow-brown papules around the mouth, nose, and eyes.
  • GPD is generally self-limiting with no systemic involvement.

Observation:

  • A study reviewed 5 children with GPD exhibiting additional extrafacial granulomatous papules.
  • These extrafacial lesions were histologically and clinically similar to facial lesions.
  • No systemic involvement was noted in these cases.

Findings:

  • Extrafacial lesions in GPD are identical to facial lesions.
  • The presence of extrafacial lesions did not alter the self-limiting nature of the condition.
  • Systemic antibiotic therapy appeared to hasten resolution in 4 out of 5 patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Extrafacial lesions in GPD do not indicate a worse prognosis.
  • Avoidance of aggressive diagnostic evaluations is recommended.
  • Inappropriate systemic therapies should not be administered for GPD.
