Summary
A rare mediastinal teratoma originating from the ascending aorta was incidentally discovered. Surgical resection is recommended for diagnosis and treatment of these unusual mediastinal tumors.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Surgery
- Thoracic Oncology
- Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Mediastinal tumors are often asymptomatic and found incidentally on thoracic imaging.
- Mature cystic teratomas are germ cell tumors that can occur in various locations.
Observation:
- A large, mature, cystic mediastinal teratoma was identified in an unusual location, arising from the ascending aortic adventitia in the medial mediastinum.
- The teratoma was diagnosed via thoracic computed tomography (CT) during follow-up for empyema.
Findings:
- Complete surgical resection of the mediastinal teratoma was performed.
- This specific origin and location of a mediastinal teratoma has not been previously reported in English medical literature.
Implications:
- Surgical resection is the preferred treatment for mediastinal teratomas, allowing for complete removal and definitive tissue diagnosis.
- This case highlights the importance of considering rare origins for mediastinal masses discovered incidentally.
