Summary

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) targets are evolving, with new therapies like advanced statins and combination treatments aiding achievement. Raising high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) alongside LDL-C reduction shows promise for further event reduction.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Lipid Metabolism

Background:

  • Current guidelines recommend specific low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) targets.
  • Achieving these targets is crucial for cardiovascular risk management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss the evolving targets for LDL-C.
  • To highlight available and emerging therapeutic strategies for lipid management.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current clinical guidelines and therapeutic options.
  • Discussion of novel approaches in lipid-lowering therapy.

Main Results:

  • Established LDL-C goals are <100 mg/dL, with <70 mg/dL for very-high-risk patients.
  • More potent statins and combination therapies are available to meet these goals.

Conclusions:

  • LDL-C targets are becoming more stringent.
  • Simultaneous elevation of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) with aggressive LDL-C lowering may offer enhanced cardiovascular event reduction.
