This study compared self-etching dental bonding agents to a total-etch control. Clearfil SE Bond, ABF, and Optibond Solo Self-etch showed comparable dentine shear bond strength to the control.

  • Sixty human third molars were prepared to expose superficial dentine with a standardized smear layer.
  • Five self-etching agents (Xeno III, Clearfil SE Bond, ABF, Optibond Solo Self-etch, Adper Prompt-L-Pop) and one total-etch control (Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus) were tested.
  • Resin stubs were bonded to dentine, and shear bond strength was measured using an Instron testing machine at 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed.
  • Main Results:

    • Clearfil SE Bond (26.2 MPa), ABF (25.9 MPa), and Optibond Solo Self-etch (21.9 MPa) demonstrated shear bond strengths comparable to the control (Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus, 24.1 MPa).
    • Xeno III (17.3 MPa) and Adper Prompt-L-Pop (15.4 MPa) exhibited significantly lower shear bond strengths than the control (p < 0.05).
    • Statistical analysis using ANOVA confirmed significant differences among the tested bonding agents.

    Conclusions:

    • Clearfil SE Bond, ABF, and Optibond Solo Self-etch are viable alternatives to the tested total-etch system, offering comparable dentine bond strength.
    • Xeno III and Adper Prompt-L-Pop may have limitations in achieving optimal dentine bond strength in this in vitro model.
    • Further research is recommended to evaluate enamel bond strength and micro-leakage for these agents.
