Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Hematology

Context:

  • The link between cancer and venous thromboembolism is established.
  • Hemostatic system components may play a role in tumor development.

Purpose:

  • To review evidence suggesting low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) may improve cancer survival.
  • To highlight the need for further research into LMWH's anti-cancer mechanisms and treatment protocols.

Summary:

  • Post-hoc analyses and recent prospective trials indicate that LMWH treatment may increase cancer survival.
  • The precise anti-cancer mechanisms of LMWH are not fully understood.

Impact:

  • Findings support further investigation into LMWH as a potential adjuvant therapy in cancer care.
  • Optimizing LMWH treatment regimens could improve outcomes for cancer patients.
