Abstract:
Overweight increases dyspnea and cough. Overweight patients with asthma experience more symptoms, frequent exacerbations and have poorer effects of asthma medications. In COPD, light and moderate overweight are associated with a better prognosis, whereas severe overweight is not. Similar protective effects of overweight have been reported in severe bacterial pneumonia and ARDS, but not in COVID-19 or severe influenza. This review finds that the beneficial effects of weight loss are best documented in asthma and in respiratory sleep-related disorders.
