Summary

Laparoscopic colorectal surgery is being implemented in Denmark, but its widespread adoption by many departments is not yet optimal. Nationwide coordination is proposed to improve research and clinical outcomes for this advanced procedure.

Summary:

  • A total of 441 laparoscopic colorectal resections were performed between January 2004 and November 2005.
  • Only 5 out of 23 departments performed more than 20 procedures, indicating varied adoption.
  • Median length of stay was 5 days for laparoscopic colon resections without stoma.

Impact:

  • Widespread adoption by numerous departments may not be appropriate due to learning curves and costs.
  • Nationwide coordination is suggested to optimize research and clinical results.
  • Standardization of advanced laparoscopic colorectal procedures is recommended.
