A case of a caruncle abscess caused by Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was successfully treated. This highlights MRSA as a potential pathogen for caruncle infections, a condition not previously reported.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Eyelid abscesses are common, but caruncle abscesses are rare.
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a significant pathogen in various infections.

Observation:

  • A 60-year-old woman presented with a right caruncle abscess while undergoing treatment for a left lower eyelid abscess.
  • Cultures from both lesions identified MRSA.

Findings:

  • The patient received treatment with oral ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin eye drops, incision, and drainage.
  • Both the eyelid and caruncle abscesses resolved completely following treatment.

Implications:

  • This case suggests MRSA can cause caruncle abscesses.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research may be needed to understand the prevalence and management of MRSA caruncle infections.
