When an object's velocity changes over time, the total distance traveled can be determined by summing small displacement intervals over short increments. Background:

  • Physical activity (PA) surveillance in physical education (PE) needs objective measures.
  • Current methods may not accurately reflect student engagement during PE lessons.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish a steps/min guideline for accurately classifying fifth and sixth graders' PA levels in PE.
  • To validate pedometry as a tool for PA surveillance in PE settings.

Main Methods:

  • 147 students (11.48 ± 0.83 years) from five schools participated.
  • Physical activity was assessed using behavioral observation and pedometry.
  • Logistic regression, linear regression, and ROC curve analysis were used to determine cut points.

Main Results:

  • Physical activity measures from observation and pedometry were strongly correlated (r = 0.80).
  • A steps/min interval of 60-62 was identified as the optimal cut point.

Conclusions:

  • Steps/min is a valid and practical method for quantifying PA time in structured programs like PE.
  • Pedometry provides objective and accurate PA surveillance, supporting public health goals within PE.
