Summary

Chronic otitis media often affects both ears, with 91.8% of contralateral ears showing changes like granulation tissue and effusion. The severity of cholesteatoma in one ear strongly correlates with its presence in the other.

Background:

  • Chronic otitis media (COM) is a persistent inflammation of the middle ear.
  • Understanding the bilateral nature of COM and associated pathologies is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of pathological changes in the contralateral ear among individuals with chronic otitis media.
  • To assess the correlation between the extent of disease in the more affected ear and the contralateral ear.

Main Methods:

  • A transversal study was conducted on 85 pairs of human temporal bones.
  • Temporal bones were examined using light microscopy.
  • Chronic otitis media was defined by irreversible inflammatory alterations; the contralateral ear was the less affected one.
  • Statistical analyses included chi-squared and Spearman's nonparametric tests.

Main Results:

  • Cholesteatoma was found in 22.4% of the more affected ears.
