Abstract:
Asthma is a common illness and in Switzerland the majority of patients with asthma are managed in primary care. Guidelines are available for asthma management helping to improve outcome measures, if implementation in daily practice takes place. All guidelines mention the value of partnership between the patient and doctor and foster guided self-management including written action plans. What is meant by such terms, how do we issue advice and plans and are they really working? The review addresses important aspects of self-management and answers the raised questions. It is concluded, that patient education and guided self-management are essential parts in caring for asthma patients and offering good daily practice. Strategies to overcome the barriers for implementation of evidence based patient education into clinical practice are needed.
