  • A separate electronic survey was sent to Program Directors (PDs) or Associate Program Directors (APDs) of U.S. general surgery residencies to gather data on RRD types and research impact.
  • Statistical analyses were performed using Microsoft Excel and MedCalc software.

    • A 76% response rate from residents (47/62) indicated that 98 projects were submitted to RRD, including retrospective clinical studies (53%) and basic science research (35%).
    • Twenty percent (20%) of submitted projects were created specifically for RRD, with a significant portion (7/20) presented at external scientific meetings and 8/20 published.
    • Among program directors (47% response rate), 78% of programs host an RRD or similar forum, with required submission being a key driver for novel projects (p < 0.001).

    Conclusions:

    • Resident Research Days are prevalent in most general surgery training programs and effectively stimulate research activity.
    • RRD events contribute to the completion of novel research projects, which are subsequently presented internally and published in peer-reviewed journals.
    • These forums generally meet resident expectations and play a crucial role in fostering research endeavors during surgical training.
