Angular light-scattering patterns were measured at various angles.

Changes in light scattering parameters (dissymmetry, 90-degree intensity) were correlated with mitochondrial swelling/contraction.

Optical density measurements were performed for comparison.

Main Results:

Mitochondrial suspensions exhibited a large forward light-scattering component, characteristic of large particles.
Changes in light scattering parameters directly correlated with mitochondrial swelling and contraction.
Light scattering detected conformational changes at lower mitochondrial concentrations than optical density.
