[Special features of dermatologic rehabilitation for children and adolescents]

The rehabilitation of children and adolescents is an important aspect of the care of patients with chronic dermatologic conditions. It differs from adult rehabilitation in terms of the indications, the legal prerequisites and the concepts applied. In particular, the specific developmental needs of children must be taken into account both in the diagnosis and in the choice and application of the treatment strategies. The resulting complex therapeutic approach must necessarily also take account of the family context and involve the parents or other caregivers in the rehabilitation process. Any dermatologist working in the pediatric field should be aware of the special features of dermatological rehabilitation for children and adolescents with chronic skin conditions, in order to promote their patient's self-determination and participation in society as an equal, avoiding and counteracting discrimination, by means of dermatologic rehabilitation that conforms to the existing guidelines (section 1 SGB IX).
