A Labrador retriever with urinary issues was treated for bacterial urinary tract infection and polypoid cystitis. Surgical resection of bladder lining resolved the condition, offering a new treatment option for dogs.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Medicine
- Canine Urology
- Surgical Pathology
Background:
- Polypoid cystitis is an uncommon bladder condition in dogs.
- Clinical signs include stranguria, pollakiuria, and hematuria.
- Emphysematous cystitis can coexist with polypoid cystitis.
Observation:
- A 6-year-old spayed female Labrador retriever presented with a 12-week history of urinary signs.
- Diagnosis included bacterial urinary tract infection, diffuse polypoid cystitis, and emphysematous cystitis.
Findings:
- Combined antibiotic therapy and extensive mucosal/submucosal resection led to complete resolution of clinical signs.
- Surgical intervention effectively addressed the polypoid lesions within the urinary bladder.
Implications:
- This case highlights that polypoid cystitis is a reversible condition in dogs.
- Resection of mucosa and submucosa presents a viable surgical alternative to partial cystectomy or simple mucosal resection for treating canine polypoid cystitis.
