Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Medical Education
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Microsurgical clipping of cerebral aneurysms is declining, limiting practical training opportunities.
  • A need exists for realistic simulation models for surgical trainees.
  • Advanced training is essential for the next generation of neurosurgeons.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of novel training models for microsurgical procedures.
  • To assess the utility of PVC rat and PVA vascular models for anastomosis training.
  • To determine the value of an animal model for aneurysm clipping practice.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a microsurgical setup with PVC rat and PVA vascular models.
  • Performed end-to-end and end-to-side anastomoses at varying difficulty levels.

  • Employed a rabbit carotid artery bifurcation model for aneurysm clipping simulation.
  • Main Results:

    • Surgical duration and suture errors increased with complexity.
    • Anastomosis patency rates decreased as procedural difficulty rose.
    • The animal model provided insights into aneurysm clipping and occlusion.

    Conclusions:

    • PVC rat and PVA vascular models are effective for advanced microvascular anastomosis training.
    • The rabbit carotid artery model enhances expertise in vascular surgery.
    • These models are valuable for practicing aneurysm clipping and occlusion techniques.
