Computed tomography (CT) use in pediatric emergency departments did not increase overall. However, CT scans for head injuries and seizures decreased, while ultrasound use for abdominal pain rose, reflecting a shift towards non-radiation imaging.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Emergency Medicine
- Radiology Utilization
- Medical Imaging Trends
Background:
- Computed tomography (CT) is a valuable diagnostic tool in pediatric emergency departments (PEDs).
- Concerns regarding radiation exposure in children have prompted investigations into imaging trends.
- Understanding utilization patterns is crucial for optimizing patient care and safety.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the overall trend of CT utilization in PEDs between 2003 and 2010.
- To examine CT utilization trends based on common pediatric chief complaints.
- To compare CT trends with alternative imaging modalities.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of electronic chart records from two tertiary care PEDs.
- Analysis of annual CT utilization rates by anatomic location from 2003 to 2010.
- Linear regression analysis to compare CT trends with alternative imaging for head injury, seizure, and abdominal pain.
Main Results:
- No significant change in overall CT utilization was observed from 2003 to 2010.
- Significant declines in head CT utilization for seizures and head injuries were noted.
- Abdominal ultrasound utilization increased for abdominal pain, while abdominal CT utilization remained unchanged.
Conclusions:
- Overall CT utilization in PEDs did not increase through 2010.
- Decreased CT trends and increased use of non-radiation alternatives were observed when options were available.
- This study suggests a potential decrease in pediatric CT utilization, possibly linked to heightened awareness of radiation risks.

The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...
