A 6-hour interprofessional education (IPE) experience positively shifted attitudes among graduate students toward learning from and collaborating with other healthcare professionals. This intervention improved readiness for interprofessional learning and teamwork skills before graduation.
Area of Science:
- Healthcare Education
- Interprofessional Collaboration
- Graduate Medical Studies
Background:
- Effective collaboration among healthcare disciplines is crucial for practitioners.
- Academic institutions play a key role in developing interprofessional competencies.
- Interprofessional education (IPE) aims to foster these essential skills.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate changes in graduate students' attitudes towards learning from and collaborating with other healthcare students and professionals.
- To assess the impact of a structured interprofessional educational experience on interdisciplinary attitudes.
Main Methods:
- 123 graduate students from psychology, education, physical therapy, and social work participated in a 6-hour IPE experience.
- Attitudes were measured pre- and post-IPE using the IEPS, RIPLS, and ATHCTS.
- A repeated measures ANOVA analyzed changes in attitudes across disciplines and time points.
Main Results:
- Statistically significant increases in post-IPE scores were observed across all three attitude scales (IEPS, RIPLS, ATHCTS).
- These findings indicate a positive shift in students' attitudes towards interprofessional learning and collaboration.
- The intervention demonstrated effectiveness in improving attitudes prior to professional licensure.
Conclusions:
- A 6-hour interprofessional educational intervention can significantly improve graduate students' attitudes towards interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.
- Structured IPE experiences are effective in preparing future healthcare practitioners for teamwork.
- Early intervention through IPE positively influences attitudes essential for effective healthcare delivery.

The physician's primary responsibility is to diagnose illness and direct the medical or surgical treatment of the condition.
