Summary

Laparoscopic surgery for retrorectal tumors is feasible and safe, reducing trauma and improving visualization. This approach minimizes vascular and neurological injuries in the presacral space.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and safety of a transabdominal laparoscopic approach for retrorectal tumors.
  • To assess the efficacy of laparoscopy in visualizing presacral structures and minimizing surgical complications.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of nine patients who underwent transabdominal laparoscopic excision of retrorectal tumors between 2005 and 2011.
  • Preoperative diagnosis was confirmed with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
  • Patient demographics, tumor characteristics, surgical outcomes, and follow-up data were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Laparoscopic excision was successful in eight of nine patients; one required open conversion due to tumor size (>7 cm).
  • No postoperative mortality occurred; one patient experienced a pelvic hematoma.
  • Tumor diagnoses included schwannomas, ganglioneuroma, tailgut cysts, anterior meningocele, and paragangliomas. Four patients had postoperative neurological complications.

Conclusions:

  • The transabdominal laparoscopic approach is a safe and feasible option for managing retrorectal tumors.
  • Laparoscopy offers reduced surgical trauma and enhanced visualization of the presacral space.
  • This technique aids in minimizing potential vascular and neurological injuries during tumor resection.
