Summary

Older drivers frequently struggle with wayfinding, impacting driving performance and mobility. Poorer health, cognition, and less experience predict these wayfinding difficulties in older adults.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify cognitive and demographic factors predicting perceived wayfinding difficulty in older drivers.
  • To examine predictors of avoiding unfamiliar areas and the utilization of wayfinding strategies among seniors.

Main Methods:

  • A mail-out survey was administered to 534 drivers aged 65 and older (excluding those with dementia or Parkinson's).
  • Data collected included self-reported wayfinding ability, avoidance behaviors, strategy use, and demographic/health information.

Main Results:

  • Nearly 60% of older drivers reported poor or fair wayfinding abilities.
  • Older age, poorer self-reported health and cognition, and less driving experience were associated with greater wayfinding difficulty.

  • Primary strategies included using street directories while driving (61.9%) and pulling over to check maps (55.1%).

  • Avoidance of unfamiliar areas is reported by a subset of older drivers, particularly females with lower wayfinding confidence.
  • Current wayfinding strategies predominantly involve manual methods, with limited adoption of navigation systems.
