Summary

This study tested a new method to assess pancreatic function during routine upper endoscopy. The test involves measuring bicarbonate in duodenal juice after secretin stimulation. Researchers compared this method to fecal elastase 1 (FE1) in diagnosing pancreatic insufficiency. The endoscopic test showed higher accuracy and better predictive values than FE1. The test is quick and can be done during standard endoscopic procedures. The results suggest this method may be useful for detecting early or mild chronic pancreatitis. The researchers propose that this test could improve clinical diagnostics and help overcome current limitations in diagnosing pancreatic disease.
