sCD30 and sCD40L detection in patients with osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma

Serum levels of soluble CD30 (sCD30) and soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L) are elevated in primary malignant bone tumors, particularly Ewing sarcoma for sCD30 and all types for sCD40L.

- Primary malignant bone tumors affect children and adolescents, with Osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, and chondrosarcoma being most common.
- Elevated soluble CD30 (sCD30) and soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L) are noted in lymphoma, leukemia, and autoimmune disorders.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate serum concentrations of sCD30 and sCD40L in patients diagnosed with primary malignant bone tumors.
Main Methods:
- Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure serum sCD30 and sCD40L levels.
- The study included 54 patients with primary bone tumors (31 Osteosarcomas, 14 Ewing sarcomas, 9 Chondrosarcomas) and 54 healthy controls.
- Patients with prior treatment history were excluded.
Main Results:
- Mean serum sCD30 was significantly higher in Ewing sarcoma patients compared to controls (p=0.007).
- Mean serum sCD40L was significantly elevated in Osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, and Chondrosarcoma patients versus controls (p<0.0001).
- Chondrosarcoma patients exhibited higher sCD40L levels than both Ewing sarcoma and Osteosarcoma patients (p<0.001).
Conclusions:
- Serum sCD30 and sCD40L levels show an increase in primary bone tumors.
- The diagnostic or prognostic significance of these elevated markers requires further research.
