Area of Science:
- Reproductive Health Research Ethics
- Women's Health Research
- Bioethics in Developing Countries
Background:
- Reproductive health (RH) research is central to women's health, but increased studies, especially in developing nations, raise ethical concerns.
- Unethical, illegal, and abusive research practices necessitate heightened attention to ethical issues in RH research.
- Practitioners in RH research require guidance to navigate complex ethical challenges.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a practical and contextually relevant ethical framework for reproductive health research.
- To provide guidance for researchers and clinicians involved in women's health studies.
- To address the specific ethical needs within the socio-cultural context of Iran.
Main Methods:
- A three-round Delphi study involving 45 expert academics and clinicians.
- Data collection through open-ended questions via email, analyzed by conventional content analysis.
- Literature review integration, face and content validity assessment, and consensus building.
Main Results:
- Key ethical considerations emerged, including research process management and participant rights protection.
- Essential elements identified were third-party consent, gender-sensitive research, and conflict of interest management.
- A comprehensive framework addressing critical ethical dimensions in RH research was established.
Conclusions:
- A practical ethical framework tailored to the socio-cultural context of Iran for RH research has been developed.
- Adherence to the framework can safeguard practitioners from legal repercussions.
- The framework supports the protection of clients' reproductive rights in research settings.
