Background:

Whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators possess high quality factors, making them excellent platforms for nonlinear optical processes.
Silica microspheres are a promising material for fabricating WGM microresonators due to their optical properties.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze third-order nonlinear optical interactions (χ((3))) in silica microspheres.
To achieve tunable, room temperature, continuous-wave (cw) multicolor emission in WGM microresonators.

Main Methods:

Experimental and theoretical analysis of third harmonic generation (THG).
Investigation of Raman-assisted third-order sum-frequency generation (SFG).
Control of cavity mode dispersion and excitation of nonequatorial modes.

Main Results:

Demonstration of efficient frequency conversion in silica microspheres.
Achieved tunable, room temperature, cw multicolor emission.
Successful implementation of THG and Raman-assisted SFG in the visible spectrum.

Conclusions:

Silica microspherical WGM microresonators are highly effective for nonlinear optical applications.
