Nasal polyp recurrence may be linked to specific adhesion molecules like epithelial membrane antigen (EMA/mucin 1) and CD86. These molecules, particularly EMA, show higher expression in patients with recurrent nasal polyposis after surgery.
Area of Science:
- Immunology
- Oncology
- Rhinology
Background:
- Nasal polyposis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the nasal and paranasal sinuses.
- Adhesion molecules are implicated in the pathogenesis of nasal polyposis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the role of adhesion molecules, mucins, and oncogenes in the recurrence of nasal polyposis.
- To identify potential biomarkers for predicting nasal polyp recurrence.
Main Methods:
- A comparative study involving 21 patients with recurrent nasal polyposis (post-two surgeries) and 21 control patients (post-one surgery).
- Analysis of epithelial membrane antigen (EMA/mucin 1) and CD86 expression in stromal cells.
Main Results:
- Significant differences in stromal epithelial membrane antigen (EMA/mucin 1) (p < 0.001) and CD86 expression (p = 0.009) were found between the groups.
- High CD86 stromal expression was observed in 6 patients with recurrent polyps, but none in the control group.
- Stromal EMA was positively correlated with polyp recurrence in a logistic regression model.
Conclusions:
- Adhesion molecules, specifically EMA and CD86, may play a role in the prognosis and recurrence of nasal polyposis.
- These findings suggest potential therapeutic targets for managing recurrent nasal polyposis.
