Relationship between the GOLD combined COPD assessment staging system and bacterial isolation

Bacterial infections causing acute exacerbations in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are linked to exacerbation frequency, not GOLD stage or lung function. This finding aids in selecting appropriate antibiotics for COPD treatment.

- Exacerbation frequency, rather than FEV1 or CAT scores, is more strongly associated with differences in bacterial causes of acute exacerbations.
- Assessing exacerbation frequency is vital for successful empirical antibiotic selection in managing COPD exacerbations.
