Obesity01:24

Obesity

1.6K
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in...

Community Based Intervention

620
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

2.3K
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

3.1K
A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Migration00:53

Migration

9.3K
Migration is long-range, seasonal movement from one region or habitat to another. This common strategy, carried out by many different organisms around the world, is an adaptive response that typically corresponds to changes in an organism’s environment, like resource availability or climate. Migrations can involve huge groups of thousands of animals as well as single individuals traveling alone and can range from thousands of kilometers to just a few hundred meters.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric health
  • Nutrition science
  • Public health interventions

Background:

  • Migrant farmworker children face unique health challenges, including higher risks of unhealthy weight.
  • Early interventions are crucial to address health disparities in this vulnerable population.
  • The Migrant Education Program (MEP) provides a unique setting for health promotion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a healthy weight intervention for children of migrant farmworkers.
  • To assess changes in weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), BMI-percentiles (BMI-p), physical fitness, nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.
  • To determine the intervention's effectiveness within a 7-week summer MEP.

Main Methods:

  • A two-group pre-post quasi-experimental design was employed.
  • 171 Latino children (grades 1-8) of migrant farmworkers participated (intervention n=138, comparison n=33).
  • Measurements included weight, BMI, BMI-p, muscle strength/flexibility, nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.

Main Results:

  • The intervention group showed a statistically significant decrease in BMI-p and trends toward healthy BMI.
  • Significant improvements were observed in muscle flexibility and healthy behavior attitudes in the intervention group.
  • Increased attendance in the MEP correlated significantly with four positive outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • The healthy weight intervention demonstrates potential for reducing unhealthy weight in Latino migrant children.
  • Findings suggest a capacity to decrease the incidence of premature adult diseases in this population.
  • Successful interventions may lead to reduced future healthcare costs.
