This study shows that diffractive trifocal intraocular lenses significantly improve binocular vision at near, intermediate, and distance. Patients experienced better visual outcomes with these advanced intraocular lenses.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Optometry
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Evaluation of binocular visual outcomes after trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.
- Comparison of binocular vs. monocular visual acuity at various distances.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the binocular visual performance at near, intermediate, and distance.
- To compare binocular outcomes with monocular outcomes in patients with diffractive trifocal IOLs.
Main Methods:
- Study included 100 eyes from 50 patients undergoing bilateral refractive lens exchange or cataract surgery.
- Implantation of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (AT LISA tri 839MP).
- Preoperative and 3-month postoperative ophthalmological examinations including visual acuities (UDVA, CDVA, UIVA, UNVA) and manifest refraction.
Main Results:
- Significant improvements in uncorrected distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA), and near visual acuities (UNVA), and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA).
- Statistically significant better binocular visual outcomes compared to monocular outcomes at all tested distances (p < 0.0001 for UIVA).
- Postoperative manifest refraction within ±0.50 D in 86% of patients.
Conclusions:
- Diffractive trifocal IOLs enhance near, intermediate, and distance vision compared to preoperative status.
- A statistically significant improvement in binocular visual function across all distances was observed.
