Summary

Multiple malignancies affect 5.0% of lung cancer patients in Poland. Lung cancer often appears as a second cancer, with synchronous cancers diagnosed at an older age than metachronous ones.

Background:

  • Cancer survival rates have improved due to advances in treatment and early detection.
  • The increasing prevalence of cancer necessitates understanding patterns of multiple malignancies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of multiple malignancies in hospitalized cancer patients in Poland.
  • To analyze the role of lung cancer in patients with multiple primary tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of medical records of 1112 cancer patients hospitalized between January 2013 and August 2014.
  • Inclusion criteria: patients with at least two distinct cancer diagnoses.

Main Results:

  • 5.0% of lung cancer patients had multiple malignancies.
  • Lung cancer was the most common accompanying malignancy (52 cases).
  • Lung cancer was more frequently the second malignancy (39 cases) than the first (11 cases) or third (2 cases).
  • Other primary cancers included colorectal, prostate, renal cell, bladder, hematopoietic, and breast cancers.
  • Synchronous cancers were diagnosed at an older age compared to metachronous cancers.

Conclusions:

  • Multiple malignancies represent a significant proportion of lung cancer cases.
  • Lung cancer frequently occurs as a secondary diagnosis in patients with multiple cancers.
  • Age at diagnosis differs between synchronous and metachronous multiple cancers.
