Physical and emotional support to aid those diagnosed with heart failure
Abstract:
The label 'heart failure' strikes fear into the heart of many patients because it implies the inability of this vital organ to maintain its function. Typical symptoms include fatigue, dyspnoea and activity intolerance. According to this study, the comments that older patients made on receiving a diagnosis of heart failure include 'I am fighting for breath' and 'I'm so very, very tired I can't do anything'. Controlling these symptoms requires patients to follow vigorous lifestyle modifications which may conflict with their preferences, culture and traditions. However, progressive physical debilitation is still inevitable and the patient will become more physically dependent. Isolation and loneliness are particularly likely for this group of people; and many patients have said this disease can lead to intense negative emotions. There is also a possibility of cognitive impairment which can further compromise quality of life.
