Abstract:
Community hospitals are seeing an increasing number of patients with psychiatric problems in their emergency rooms (ERs). Nurse administrators can decrease extended ER psychiatric patient waiting, and the disruptive behavior which may result, by using an interdepartmental team of ER and mental health unit RNs able to perform psychiatric assessments. This can be accomplished through a competency program based on collaboration.
