This study shows that number processing involves both spatial and size information, which operate independently. These distinct numerical associations may reflect different aspects of numerical meaning, such as ordinality and cardinality.

  • To investigate the simultaneous occurrence and interaction of space- and size-numerical congruency effects.
  • To determine if these effects interact within and across trials during numerical tasks.

  • Participants performed a magnitude judgment task.
  • Stimuli included physically small or large digits presented to the left or right of screen center.
  • Reaction times were analyzed to assess congruency effects.

Main Results:

  • Space- and size-congruency effects were found to coexist and combine additively.
  • A selective sequential modulation of congruency effects was observed.
  • The size-congruity effect decreased after incongruent trials; the space-congruency effect was only influenced by prior space congruency.
