Area of Science:

  • Dental Implantology
  • Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM)

Background:

  • CAD/CAM technology enhances precision and accuracy in implant dentistry procedures.
  • Maxillary sinus floor elevation is a common procedure in implant dentistry.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of CAD/CAM surgical guides versus the standard technique for reducing membrane perforation during maxillary sinus floor elevation.
  • To evaluate the safety and accuracy of computer-guided surgery in this context.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty maxillary sinus elevation cases were randomized into two groups: computer-guided and standard lateral window approach.
  • Both groups underwent simultaneous implant placement with the sinus elevation procedure.

Main Results:

  • The computer-guided group had a significantly lower incidence of membrane perforation (1 out of 10 cases) compared to the non-guided group (3 out of 10 cases).
  • Sinus septa were present in 3 cases in the guided group and 2 cases in the non-guided group, with perforations occurring in 2 of these in the non-guided group.

Conclusions:

  • Computer-guided sinus floor elevation using CAD/CAM technology demonstrated promising results in reducing membrane perforations.
  • This technique offers a safe and accurate alternative to the standard lateral window approach for maxillary sinus elevation in implant dentistry.
