Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Computer Science
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Falls represent a significant health risk for elderly individuals, leading to injury and mortality.
  • Current fall detection methods often rely on wearable devices, which suffer from poor user compliance due to forgetfulness.
  • Market-ready artificial vision-based fall detection systems are currently limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a novel, low-cost fall detection system for smart homes utilizing artificial vision.
  • To address the limitations of existing fall detection technologies, particularly for the elderly population.
  • To improve the reliability and accessibility of fall detection systems.

Main Methods:

  • The system integrates multiple computer vision algorithms, including background subtraction, Kalman filtering, and optical flow.
  • These algorithms serve as inputs to a machine learning model designed for high detection accuracy.
  • The system is designed for seamless integration into smart home environments.

Main Results:

  • The developed fall detector demonstrated a detection ratio exceeding 96% in tests.
  • Evaluations were conducted using a dataset of over 50 diverse fall videos.
  • The system shows high accuracy and reliability in identifying falls.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed artificial vision-based fall detector offers a promising, non-wearable solution for elderly safety.
  • The combination of advanced algorithms and machine learning ensures high detection performance.
  • This technology has the potential to significantly reduce fall-related injuries and deaths in older adults.
