Abstract:
Children have not always held the privileged position within the family that they enjoy today. In the predominantly rural society of the past, they belonged as much to a lineage as they did to their parents. The frailty of life was such that the need to carry on the line of descent overrode any other considerations. From the 18th century, a new concept of the family appeared, in which the child, more autonomous, became an object of attention and affection.
